President

A wise person once said, “I wouldn’t change you for the world, but I would change the world for you.” that is how I feel when I think about my daughter Laurel. 9 years ago, my wife and I went through what most of you have experienced. All I can say is that this beautiful little girl has taught her daddy so much, she has helped me understand that there are things in life which transcend the rigor of day to day living and require our full attention. I chose to get involved with a local association and dedicate my time and energy to working at a grassroots level. I came to realize that we have a lot of work to do in Ontario and I wanted to help be part of that communal solution.

My name is Carlo DiCarlo, I am a teacher in the Peel region and I am honoured to serve in the capacity of Down Syndrome Association of Ontario President. For the past several years, there has been a greater recognition of the Down Syndrome community in the province and we need to continue to advocate for all individuals with Down syndrome. I work with a dedicated group of individuals who serve as the DSAO Board of Directors and together driven by empathy, hope, and a shared vision of equity and inclusion, we work to usher in a more embracive Ontario for the 24 local associations we represent across Ontario.

I also want to thank all of the leaders and volunteers who work tirelessly to build a more caring and inclusive culture at the micro level in their communities. Your involvement as a volunteer has far-reaching impacts that go beyond what words can fully capture. Every hour you spend supporting local programs, participating in events, mentoring families, or advocating for inclusion helps build a province where individuals with Down syndrome are seen, heard, respected, and celebrated. You are a vital thread in the fabric of our movement, and it’s important you know just how meaningful your contributions are. Your work helps foster environments where individuals with Down Syndrome feel empowered, where they are encouraged to speak up, to take on leadership roles, and to pursue their dreams. You are an ally, an advocate, and a role model. That impact echoes far into the future, influencing the lives of individuals and shaping a culture of respect across Ontario.

As we look to the future, our mission remains clear: to help build a province where individuals with Down syndrome can thrive in every aspect of life from education and employment to health care, recreation, and leadership. The road ahead is filled with both challenges and possibilities, and we are excited to move forward with you by our side. There is still much work to do. But with your continued support, we know the DSAO can be vital cog in continuing to break down barriers, change perceptions, and ensure that every individual with Down syndrome in Ontario has the opportunities they deserve.

Our mission is a communal one, I am truly blessed to walk this road with all of you. Thank you….
